Apple iOS Autocomplete System Uses Undisclosed Word Restrictions
Share
Researcher Derik Kauffman has identified an undisclosed multilingual “gray list” within Apple’s iOS predictive text system that restricts the autocomplete and swipe-typing of specific words and phrases.
The findings, reported by Reuters, reveal that the system avoids suggesting tens of thousands of terms to users.
The list reportedly includes politically sensitive terms such as “Dictator Trump” and “Sleepy Joe”. While the restrictions do not prevent users from manually typing these words in text messages or emails, the system will not offer them as suggestions during the typing process.
Impact on Digital Expression
Kauffman described the mechanism as a “light-touch” form of censorship. He noted that at the scale of Apple’s global user base, even subtle interventions in predictive text can influence how hundreds of millions of people communicate.
Beyond the influence on digital discourse, the discovery raises questions regarding user privacy. The implementation of such lists could potentially facilitate user fingerprinting by monitoring specific semantic usage and typing cadence patterns.
