NDPC and GIZ validate data privacy framework for e-commerce

Share

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has validated a new Data Privacy Framework for e-Commerce in partnership with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The framework is designed to strengthen sectoral compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023 and build consumer trust within the digital marketplace.

The validation workshop, held in Abuja, follows an earlier session conducted in Lagos that engaged private-sector stakeholders. The Abuja meeting was organised to integrate inputs from the public sector to ensure a comprehensive regulatory approach.

NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, stated that the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy depends on the assurance that personal data is adequately protected during online transactions. He warned that non-compliance with the NDP Act carries significant risks, particularly regarding the unlawful collection, processing, and profiling of personal data.

The workshop was attended by representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and the Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy, Dr Karin Jansen, who represented Ambassador Annett Günther.
