The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has validated a new data privacy framework specifically for the e-commerce sector to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.
The framework, developed in partnership with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), aims to build trust within Nigeria’s digital economy. The validation process took place during a workshop in Abuja, following a previous engagement in Lagos that involved private-sector stakeholders.
While the Lagos session focused on industry players, the Abuja workshop was designed to incorporate feedback from the public sector, including various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Strengthening consumer trust
NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, emphasised that the growth of e-commerce relies on the assurance that personal data is adequately protected. He noted that businesses can only thrive when customers, acting as data subjects, feel secure in the digital marketplace.
Olatunji also cautioned against the risks of unlawful data collection and processing, specifically mentioning the dangers of unauthorised profiling. He stressed that non-compliance with the NDP Act carries significant consequences for organisations.
International cooperation
The event was attended by representatives from the digital economy sector and the German Embassy. Dr Karin Jansen, Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy, represented the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Nigeria, H.E. Annett Günther.
The implementation of this framework will provide e-commerce operators with clearer guidance on meeting their legal obligations under the 2023 Act.
