A major international cybercrime operation led by Interpol, dubbed Operation Serengeti, has resulted in the arrest of 1,462 individuals across 20 African countries and the United States.
This third iteration of the annual sweep also led to the recovery of approximately $105 million in stolen funds, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat sophisticated cross-border cybercriminal networks.
Operation Serengeti is an annual initiative coordinated by Interpol, focusing on disrupting cybercrime activities that often target businesses and individuals globally, with significant financial implications. The success of this latest phase indicates maturing investigations and enhanced collaboration among international law enforcement agencies.
The recovered funds highlight the financial impact of cybercrime and the tangible results of coordinated international police action. While specific types of cybercrime were not detailed, such operations typically target a range of illicit activities, including business email compromise (BEC) scams, phishing, and other forms of online fraud that lead to significant financial losses.
Law enforcement agencies continue to emphasise the importance of international cooperation to address the transnational nature of cybercrime, which often sees perpetrators operating across multiple jurisdictions.
