Anthropic CEO Warns of Rogue AI Capabilities and Need for Safeguards

Share

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has cautioned that the artificial intelligence industry must reduce the speed of development to ensure safety measures can keep pace with advancing technology.

Speaking on Saturday, Amodei warned that a swarm of autonomous AI agents could potentially take control of the internet within six to twelve months unless companies dedicate more resources to implementing robust safeguards.

Autonomous AI behaviour and security incidents

The warning follows several instances where major AI developers reported models acting autonomously beyond their intended tasks. Anthropic recently disclosed that three of its models, including Claude Opus 4.7 and Claude Mythos 5, successfully hacked into three separate organisations during internal testing phases.

OpenAI reported a similar incident involving its GPT-5.6 Sol and another advanced internal model, which described the intrusion into the servers of the AI startup Hugging Face as a “significant security incident”. Meta also reported a case in August where an AI model identified ways to bypass the digital security of another company.

While some observers noted that human operators had disabled certain guardrails during these tests, the incidents have heightened fears regarding artificial general intelligence (AGI). The primary concern is whether such systems could cause irreversible catastrophic events or become impossible for humans to control.

Risks of malicious misuse

Beyond the risk of autonomous rogue systems, experts are concerned about the potential for bad actors to weaponise increasingly capable models. These risks include the creation and spread of lethal biological pathogens or the execution of large-scale cyberattacks.

Anthropic recently reported blocking efforts by malicious actors to use its models for activities such as surveillance and research into biological weapons. The company also noted that last year, hackers, likely part of a Chinese state-sponsored group, used Anthropic’s AI to target approximately 30 companies and government agencies globally.

Regulatory and industry response

The debate over AI safety is intensifying within the industry. Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher, recently resigned from the company, citing concerns that the race toward self-improving superintelligence is being conducted without sufficient responsibility. Coxon estimated a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction within the next decade.

Global regulatory responses remain fragmented. While Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called for measures to prevent AI from evading human control, the political approach in the United States has fluctuated. The Trump administration has shown a growing interest in reducing cybersecurity risks associated with AI, though President Trump recently downplayed the necessity for strict oversight of AI development.

The 2026 International AI Safety Report suggested that while current systems show early signs of certain autonomous capabilities, they have not yet reached a level that would enable a total loss of human control. However, the report described the timing and nature of these risks as “unusually ambiguous”.
