The FBI has revealed a remarkable new weapon in its fight against cybercrime: a fully constructed replica town designed to simulate real-world cyberattacks and train investigators for increasingly complex digital threats.

Hidden inside a massive facility in Huntsville, Alabama, the FBI’s “Kinetic Cyber Range” looks like a small American town complete with homes, a hospital, a hotel, a gas station, a grocery store, a courthouse, and even a power company. But unlike a typical community, every building is packed with functioning networks, connected devices, and digital systems that can be targeted in realistic cyberattack scenarios.

The 22,000-square-foot facility was created to help agents, analysts, and digital forensic specialists gain hands-on experience responding to cyber incidents before facing them in the real world. The FBI says more than 1,400 students, including personnel from federal, state, and local agencies, have already trained at the site since it opened in 2025.

One of the most important features of the cyber town is its ability to simulate ransomware attacks and critical infrastructure disruptions. Trainees can practice responding to scenarios such as hospital systems being locked by hackers, power networks being compromised, or corporate data centers suffering major breaches. These exercises are designed to replicate the pressure and complexity investigators encounter during actual cyber emergencies.

The range also includes a sophisticated data center housing more than 200 physical servers running different operating systems. Investigators learn how to collect evidence, trace intrusions, analyze compromised networks, and recover systems after cyberattacks. Officials say the environment mirrors the conditions found in real businesses and government facilities.

The FBI’s investment comes as cybercrime continues to surge across the United States. According to the bureau’s latest figures, cybercrime losses reached a record $20.9 billion in 2025, representing a significant increase from the previous year. Ransomware remains one of the most serious threats facing critical infrastructure and public services.

Cybersecurity experts say realistic training environments are becoming increasingly important as hackers target everything from hospitals and utilities to transportation systems and local governments. The FBI hopes the Kinetic Cyber Range will help prepare the next generation of cyber investigators for threats that are growing in scale, sophistication, and impact.

As cyberattacks continue to evolve, the FBI’s secret cyber town offers a glimpse into how law enforcement is adapting to defend critical systems and protect communities from digital threats that increasingly have real-world consequences.
