NDPC advocates ‘Trust by Design’ for Africa’s digital identity infrastructure

Share

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has urged stakeholders to adopt ‘Trust by Design’ principles to secure Africa’s evolving digital identity infrastructure.

Speaking at GITEX Nigeria 2026 at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of the Commission’s Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department, emphasised that trust must be central to the continent’s digital transformation.

Bamigboye, representing the NDPC National Commissioner Dr Vincent Olatunji, participated in a panel titled “Trust by Design: The Future of Africa’s Digital Identity Infrastructure.” He highlighted that as digital identity systems evolve, privacy and data protection must be integrated from the outset rather than addressed as afterthoughts.

The Commission advocated for the implementation of Privacy by Design and Default principles. This approach requires that data protection safeguards are embedded into the initial development and deployment of all innovative digital solutions.

These recommendations come as Nigeria continues to strengthen its regulatory ecosystem following the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023.

The event was opened by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Senator Shuiab Afolabi Salisu, and featured a keynote address from the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi.
