NCC introduces framework for zero-rated educational access
Share
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a framework to implement zero-rated access to educational platforms and content across the country.
Zero-rating refers to a practice where mobile network operators allow users to access specific websites, applications, or digital services without consuming their paid data allowances. By implementing this framework, the NCC aims to lower the cost of digital learning and provide students and educators with easier access to essential academic resources.
The framework is designed to facilitate digital inclusion by ensuring that the cost of data does not act as a barrier to education. Under these guidelines, telecommunications providers will be able to offer data-free access to approved educational content and digital learning environments.
To ensure the integrity of the service, the framework will require telecommunications companies to coordinate with educational institutions. This coordination will be necessary to identify and verify the specific platforms and content that qualify for zero-rated status, preventing the misuse of data-free access for non-educational purposes.
