Microsoft Releases Emergency Updates to Fix Remote Desktop Failures

Microsoft has released emergency out-of-band (OOB) updates to resolve critical Remote Desktop Services (RDS) failures caused by recent security patches. The updates aim to fix instability that emerged following the September 2026 security updates.

The RDS issues led to connection and sign-in failures on affected systems, with some servers becoming completely unresponsive. Beyond the remote desktop service itself, Microsoft acknowledged that related components, including the Microsoft Management Console (MMC), RDS Licensing Diagnoser, File Explorer, and the Windows Update interface, could also become unresponsive.

Patch Details for Windows and Windows Server

The emergency updates target several versions of Windows to address the instability. Specifically, the Windows Server updates address RDS failures introduced by the KB5122871 update on Windows Server 2025 and the KB5122882 update on Windows Server 2022.

The following out-of-band patches have been released:

• Windows 11 26H1: KB5129194
• Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2: KB5129195
• Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2: KB5129236
• Windows Server 2025: KB5129235
• Windows Server 2022: KB5129237

Prior to the release of these permanent fixes, Microsoft provided Group Policy mitigations for affected systems. While some administrators attempted to restore functionality by uninstalling the September security updates, Microsoft noted that doing so also removed the security protections included in those patches.

Hyper-V and USB Audio Issues

The emergency releases for Windows 11 also include fixes for a Hyper-V issue affecting applications that use Host Compute Service (HCS)-managed virtual machines. Some users reported that shared Windows host folders were either invisible or inaccessible when using the Plan9 protocol to connect to Linux virtual machines.

Additionally, the updates address a multichannel audio problem affecting certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. While these devices continue to function correctly in standard stereo mode, they previously experienced failures when switching to 8-channel or 3D audio modes.

However, these emergency updates do not resolve all audio-related problems introduced by the September updates. Certain USB Audio Class 1.0 devices may still fail to start or produce audio, occasionally displaying a “Code 10” error in Device Manager. Microsoft has stated it is continuing to work on a fix for these remaining audio issues.
