Eversource Data Breach Raises Fresh Alarm Over Critical Infrastructure Security
A cyberattack targeting Eversource Energy has raised fresh concerns over critical infrastructure security in the United States after the utility confirmed that customer data was exposed in a recent breach affecting more than 3,000 individuals.
The incident, disclosed by the company, involves unauthorized access to systems containing sensitive customer information. Eversource Energy, one of the largest utility providers in the Northeast, said the compromised data may include names, home addresses, Social Security numbers, and financial account details linked to affected customers.
While the full scope of the attack is still under investigation, the exposure of personally identifiable information has triggered concern among cybersecurity experts, particularly given the potential for identity theft and financial fraud.
In response, Eversource Energy has begun notifying impacted customers and is offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. The company says it has also strengthened its internal security controls and is working with cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement agencies to assess the breach and prevent further unauthorized access.
Utility sector attacks have become increasingly common in recent years as cybercriminals target essential service providers that manage large volumes of sensitive consumer data. Experts warn that such breaches can have long-term consequences for victims, especially when financial and identity-related data is exposed.
For affected customers, authorities are advising close monitoring of bank accounts, credit reports, and any unusual activity that could indicate identity misuse.
As investigations continue, the Eversource Energy breach adds to growing pressure on critical infrastructure operators to upgrade cybersecurity defenses against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
