The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched a groundbreaking Privacy Fellowship Programme aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem and developing a new generation of privacy professionals.

The six-month residency programme, inaugurated by the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, is being implemented in partnership with the Data and Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative (DKIPPI).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Olatunji praised DKIPPI and its President, Mr. Tokunbo Smith, for their commitment to advancing data protection and privacy awareness in Nigeria. He described the Fellowship Programme as the first initiative of its kind by a Data Protection Authority anywhere in the world, emphasizing its potential to shape the future of privacy and data governance.

According to Dr. Olatunji, the programme reflects the Commission’s broader commitment to building globally competitive human capital in data protection, privacy, and digital governance. He encouraged the selected Fellows to seize the opportunity and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s privacy ecosystem.

“The opportunities within the data protection industry continue to expand globally, particularly for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and privacy professionals. This Fellowship is designed to equip participants with the skills and experience needed to thrive in this rapidly growing sector,” he said.

The NDPC boss also highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that youth development and capacity building remain key priorities for the Commission.

In his remarks, DKIPPI President, Mr. Tokunbo Smith, commended the NDPC for its proactive leadership in strengthening data governance and privacy regulation in Nigeria. He congratulated the inaugural Fellows and urged them to take full advantage of the programme to enhance their professional development and contribute to the country’s evolving digital economy.

Smith explained that participants would receive extensive exposure to data protection principles, privacy frameworks, data governance practices, regulatory compliance requirements, and other critical aspects of modern privacy management.

To further support the initiative, Dr. Olatunji announced that all Fellows would receive free access to the NDPC’s Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA), including complimentary training and professional certification as Data Protection Officers (DPOs).

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the programme as a major step toward addressing the growing demand for skilled privacy professionals in Nigeria and beyond. As organizations increasingly prioritize compliance with data protection regulations, experts believe initiatives such as the Privacy Fellowship Programme will play a crucial role in building a stronger, more mature, and globally competitive privacy ecosystem.

The launch marks another milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to position itself as a leader in data protection and digital trust across Africa, while creating new opportunities for young professionals seeking careers in privacy, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
